Swiss Electronic Payments Using DTA and EZAG

Make electronic payments for invoices using the DatenTrägerAustausch (DTA) and EZAG electronic payment methods.

Switzerland has migrated all bank messages to the ISO20022 format, including SEPA in 2020. The existing EZAG / DTA credit transfer schemes used by banks and PostFinance for over 30 years were replaced by the ISO 20022 standard. Instructions for uploading payment files are now processed as pain.001 messages, also known as Customer Credit Transfer Initiation. The IBAN number is used exclusively as the primary identification feature for a bank account connection.

Many small and medium-sized enterprises in Switzerland have not upgraded their business software to an ISO 20022 compatible version, because of time, budget, or technical debt. Our DTA Konverter, EZAG Konverter, DTA/EZAG-to-Pain.001 converters enable business continuity for those businesses.

Input: Swiss DTA/EZAG Text format
Output: XML pain.001 format

The DTA (data carrier exchange) format was used for the secure exchange of payment data between companies and banks. It allows the transmission of transaction types such as ESR or bank payments in Swiss francs or foreign currencies. A DTA file is created in a company's accounting software and can be sent directly to e-banking via the appropriate interface. The term data carrier exchange dates back to the time when data was mainly transmitted using physical data carriers such as floppy disks or memory cards. Today, the transmission usually takes place via the Internet and without physical data carriers.

The following transaction types (TA) are possible in the DTA format:

TA designation
826 ESR Payments
827 Domestic payments in CHF
830 International payments in CHF and foreign currencies and domestic payments in foreign currencies
832 Bank checks in CHF and foreign currencies
836 Payments with IBAN at home and abroad, for all currencies
837 Payments to domestic and international financial institutions, all currencies
890 total record

The following transaction types (TA) are possible in the EZAG format:

TA designation
22 Record for domestic payments to a postal account (ES)
24 Record for domestic payment instructions (ZA)
27 Record for domestic clearing payments (ES)
28 Record for payment slips (ISR) with reference number
34 Record for Cash international (CI)
37 Record for Giro international (GI) with IBAN conversion

Our solutions include the Swiss bank master from Six Interbank Clearing for determining the BIC numbers.

Structure of the DTA format

The individual payments are recorded in a standardized way as so-called records. Each payment requires the creation of a separate record. Such is divided into HEADER and TEXT. The payments are sorted in ascending order according to the following criteria:

  • Desired processing day
  • Client identification or reference number
  • Bank clearing of the client's bank

After the last payment, a total record of the total amount of the file must be recorded with a checksum.
